The Equus 3140 Innova Dignostic Code Scanner is an enhanced scan tool that is loaded with many professional features. If you are new to diagnostic scanners, this handy tool connects to your vehicle, scans various parts of your car, truck or SUV, and retrieves a list of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and code definitions from your vehicle's computer. But even if you're a veteran to scanners and auto repair, you'll be impressed with the new functionality that Equus has added to the 3140. This device not only scans your vehicle, it also allows you to freeze-frame live timing and pinpoint your vehicle's problem. Instead of having to recreate a scenario over and over again, you can now playback the timing to scrutinize all the data and make a clear diagnosis. Combine this with Internet connectivity and the ability to interface with a PC, and you have a powerful, professional diagnostic scanner in the palm of your hand.

The Equus 3140 easily scans all OBD-II
and many OBD-I vehicles.

As government agencies establish more stringent emission laws, vehicles continue to become more sophisticated for maintenance and repairs, forcing professional mechanics, DIYers, and consumers alike to find easy-to-use tools for diagnosing their vehicles. Many tools have already been developed to access these powerful on-board vehicle computers, but the Equus tool is particularly simple to use and surprisingly affordable. It is designed to be used by almost anyone, from the weekend mechanic to the ASE master technician. The 3140 Diagnostic Code Scanner can retrieve diagnostic codes in all OBD II (1996 and newer) and some of the most popular OBD I (1982 to 1995) vehicles. The scanner features a unique, patented all-in-one LCD screen that shows 25 parameters at once without the need to scroll through time consuming menus. Separate LED indicators located below the screen provide quick OBD I/M emissions checks; so you'll know if you're ready to pass those ever-increasingly stringent laws. Equus built the 3140 to display on-screen DTC definitions and user interfaces in English, Spanish, or French, and the trilingual language selection is accessed via a simple menu command. This device can store diagnostic codes in its memory for off-car review and analysis. Additionally, you can connect the 3140 to your PC with the included cables and software to generate, print, and save detailed diagnostic reports--and even update the scanner via the Internet.

The 3140 links to all OBD II protocols including CAN (Controller Area Network). The tool captures and displays freeze frame data that will help you pinpoint and troubleshoot any problem. This device is equipped to retrieve the following OBD II diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs): Generic Codes (P0, P2, P3, and U0) and Manufacturer Specific Codes (P1, P3, and U1). In addition, the tool provides live data (view, record, and playback live PCM data streams), bi-directional testing, vehicle ID capture, and O2 sensor results.

The Equus 3140 can also perform diagnostic scans for the following OBD I vehicles:
  • General Motors: all 1982-1993, and some 1994-1995 models
  • Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury: 1983-1995 models with EEC-IV systems (KOEO, KOER, timing check, cylinder balance test, output state test, and wiggle test)
  • Toyota/Lexus: 1991-1995
  • Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth: 1984-1995
  • Jeep: 1993-1995

4 out of 5 stars Equus 3140   February 22, 2010
Bud 229 (Gladstone, Michigan)
I bought the Equus 3140 and it works very good I pluged it into my 1992 Ford F150 and it told me the the thermostat was bad so I replaced it I can tell the difference when I have the heater on in the truck it's a lout warmer then it use to be the thermostat hasn't been replaced in a lout of years.
I would recommend this Code Scanner to anybody.
Also you can update this scanner on the internet that way if I get a new truck at least I know it will update for that year.
The only thing they need to add to this code scanner is the ABS Brake scan but other then that it's a very good tool.

5 out of 5 stars Great scan tool for any D.I.Y   February 20, 2010
C. Williams (North Carolina United States)
I have not used this on any OBD1 vehicles yet. I can't review that part of this tool. The OBD2 part is great. I talk to a mechanic before a bought this. I ask him what he would recommend and he said anything with live data and he ask me how much I was gonna to spend and I told him around two or three hundred. He than told me that I was on the right track. He also said never replace any part based on a DTC code. That just points you in the right direction. You then use the live data part of the tool to dig deeper to the problem. This does take skill he said. I would have to play with the tool to learn more about it and how to use it.

With that said this is a great tool for the money and for anyone who just want's to know what's going on with th'er car. I shoped around about 6 months. If I'm going to sink 2 or 3 hundred dollors into a tool I was going to find one that a mechanic recommeded and something that was easy to use. Some stores had this same tool for a much higher price others had th'er name on it with a hard case the same scan tool and everything. Whats in a case I'm putting this in my tool box.

For the bad reviews. It sounded like they were looking for a mechanic in a box. (Just hook up the tool, find out what DTC code turned the light on, replace what the code reads that simple) Nope it's harder than that. All you know at this point is what code turn the light on and what may have caused it and if you know how to read the live data then you should be able to fix it. If your still stuck and need to take take your car to the shop, you know about whats wrong. You can tell the mechanic you know something. Besides my check engine light is on.

1 out of 5 stars Beware if you want this for ODB 1   February 12, 2010

The description indicates it works with popular 1995 GM vehicles. The box it comes in even says it works with 1995 GM trucks under one ton. It does NOT work with under one ton 1995 GM "S" series trucks. This tidbit is disclosed on about page 100 in the manual. It might be a good tool with the right car. Don't know.

5 out of 5 stars 3140 equus   February 7, 2010

I purchased my unit back in December. So far i am very impressed. It worked on my 92 4x4 toyota pickup truck it let me know that my 02 sensor was bad. Also i used it on a 2003 nissan altima it had a bad thermostat. When purchasing it i read alot of information and reviews online. I was concern about my 95 oldsmobile royale because from what i read online it wouldn't work on that because of the climate controll. Which was true it didn't work but i wasn't surprise because i had already did my homework. Now you still have to be open minded just because it says one thing is bad sometimes you have to back things up just to find out what other things are inline with the sensor. But this tool will get you in the area and sometime you may have to go a step or two further. So overall for me it does the job and awhole lot more.
